How Wheels Are Made at Our Plants

1. SCRAP BINS
Griffin makes its molten steel from high quality steel scrap

2. ELECTRIC FURNACES
Three electric arc furnaces melt steel which is tapped at approximately 3,000°F

3. PRESSURE POURING STATION
Wheels are cast as controlled air pressure forces molten steel from the ladle to the graphite mold in approximately 20 seconds

4. STAND-BY LADLE POSITIONS
A pouring tank with a filled ladle of molten steel is held here to be moved into position at the pouring station after the last wheel has been poured from the unit already at the station

5. WHEEL TRANSFER
Depending upon wheel type, the wheel casting will solidify in 7 to 12 minutes. The cope (top) of the mold is removed, and the wheel is lifted by the hub and conveyed to the final finishing and inspection stations

6. COOLlNG KILN
Wheels are cooled from 2,000°F to 1,000°F to reduce stress formation

7. SPRUE REMOVAL
Riser stubs are removed using Griffin's patented hot wheel grinding machines

8. HUB CUTTING
An oxypropane hub cutting torch automatically cuts out the hub of the wheel

9. HEAT TREATING
Wheels are moved by conveyor to a rotary hearth normalizing furnace, where they are heat treated

10. RIM SPRAY
Following heat treatments, all rims are sprayed with water to harden wheel treads

11. DRAW FURNACE
After quenching, wheels are tempered

12. WHEEL CLEANER
Each wheel is shot blasted to improve its urface appearance

13. MAGNETIC PARTICLE TEST
Blacklight testing detects surface defects

14. ULTRASONIC TEST
A test made to detect sub surface discontinuit

15. AUTOMATIC BRINELL
For hardness check

16. WHEEL PEENER
A process to induce compressive stresses on plate surface of wheel

17. BORING
Here the hub is rough-bored before shipment to customer

18. FlNAL WEIGHlNG AND INSPECTION

19. MOLD PREPARATION
Both the cope and the drag are cleaned and prepared for the next pouring

20. MOLD MACHINING
Here graphite blocks are machined to the appropriate contour

21. MACHINE AND MAINTENANCE SHOP

22. CHEMISTRY LABORATORY
The chemical composition of each heat of steel is checked by a spectrometer

23. COLLECTlNG SYSTEM
An extensive system collects smoke and dust as a protective measure for both plant employees and the environment

24. SHIPPING DOCK

25. WAREHOUSE

26. PLANT OFFICE
